COMPANY HITS MAJOR MILESTONE WITHIN THREE YEARS. 81 PERCENT FOUND JOBS WITHIN 120 DAYS OF COMPLETION

HONOLULU, HI —DevLeague, the state’s first accelerated learning program for modern software development has achieved a major milestone graduating 103 alumni within three years of startup. The 12-week program is designed to teach skills to motivated adults seeking career starts in the software industry. Over 80 percent of its lumni landed software-related jobs within 120 days at companies such as Booz Allen Hamilton, Datahouse, Hawaii Pacific Health, Microsoft, State of Hawaii Enterprise Technology Services, Stanford University, Sudokrew, TeamPraxis, Uber and many startup companies in the local tech community.

Starting salaries ranged from a low of $31,000 to a high of $95,000. Starting average salaries for graduates to date were $54,326 as of November 2016.

While majority of the students enrolled in its 14 cohorts were from Hawaii, DevLeague attracted students from mainland cities such as New York, Boston, Dallas and San Francisco and international cities such as Melbourne and Mexico City.

Upon graduation, 78 percent of the alumni found employment in Hawaii, 17 percent on the mainland and 5 percent went international.

To date, the coding boot camp has awarded 35 DevLeague Elevate Fund Scholarships worth $82,500 with over 50 percent going to female applicants. Funding for the scholarships came directly from the firm’s founders.

Co-founder and curriculum developer, Jason Sewell said, “On average, 28 percent of our graduates are female, beating the US national average of 18 percent in Computer Science graduates. We’ve had some cohorts as high at 50 percent women, but in general we see a much broader range of diversity across the board here in Hawaii as compared to the mainland, where companies are really struggling to tackle the diversity issue. It’s pretty awesome to be around.”

DevLeague conducts a 12-week program for 11 hours a day and six days a week (part-time program also available) in which students learn the tools and skills to become full-stack web developers specializing in JavaScript and other open source technologies. The boot camp teaches core concepts in computer science and software engineering, client side-UX development for both mobile and the web, server-side and database programming and project architecture. The program also encourages students to integrate with the local development community with team-based participation in public projects such as hackathons, Hawaii Annual Coding Challenge, Startup Weekends and tech-oriented civil projects. Understanding that technology is only part of the equation, the comprehensive offering also provides student services focused on business networking, resume preparation, interview coaching and job placement.

DevLeague’s next full-time class starts March 13, 2017 and part-time class May 13, 2017. Deadline to apply to any cohort is one month prior to the start of each course. Tuition is currently $12,500 and need-based scholarships are available, including a unique female-only scholarship to encourage gender diversity.

When asked what’s next on the horizon after the 100 graduate milestone, Sewell had no shortage of things to say about the company’s next steps.

“We’ve spent a lot of time working with local workforce, assessing their needs, and identifying employment opportunities, and will be rolling out three new tracks in 2017 for Enterprise Software Developer, Database Administrator and Cybersecurity.”

“We’ve also been working on middle school and high school coding classes for the past two and a half years with summer and after-school programs at schools such as Punahou School and Mid-Pacific Instititue and have recently rolled a daytime pilot program into Waipahu High School for our first major breakthrough into DOE curriculum.”

“With all of the lessons we’ve learned over the past few years we recently established our own Jr. DevLeague Academy, a technology learning center, located in Mo`ili`ili where we will be offering tracks for kids in web development, game development, technical entrepreneurship and more. Parents can bring their children down for a free lesson to see if it’s a fit for them.”
