Urgency or Emergency? The Wrong Answer Could Be Costly.

May is National Urgent Care Awareness Month. According to a survey by the Urgent Care Association of America, while emergency rooms are best equipped to handle life-threatening illnesses and injuries, 98 percent of patients who visit urgent care centers are in the appropriate care setting, with only two percent needing emergency room diversion. The potential costs savings are approximately $4.4 billion annually (Health Affairs). However, free-standing emergency rooms which may look like urgent care centers may seem convenient at the time, but the emergency room prices can cause sticker shock for patients who aren’t aware of the distinction.

Not so for Urgent Care Hawaii which educates patients about when they should use urgent care instead of an emergency room. CEO Donna Schmidt remarks, “What we bring into the community is high acuity urgent care which means we care for and treat patients with complex medical problems. We offer EKGs, lab tests, splinting for sprains, IV therapy for dehydration, and more. Urgent Care Hawaii is a trusted alternative to the emergency room. This results in savings – both in cost and time – without compromising the level of care.”
