About Kyle

Kyle J. Shelly is a seasoned banker with over 17 years of experience and serves as the Senior Vice President and Director of Corporate Banking at American Savings Bank.

Kyle has earned recognition for his business and community contributions, including being named to Pacific Business News’ 40 Under 40 and Hawaii Business Magazine’s 20 for the Next 20.

He is a board director and executive committee member of the Chamber of Commerce Hawaii, and serves as its Chair of the Business Services Committee. In addition, Kyle serves as a Board Member for the Domestic Violence Action Center and for over a decade has been a mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters Hawaii. Lastly, Kyle serves as an honorary commander of the 515th Air Mobility Operations Wing. In this role, he collaborates with the Wing to strengthen community ties and garner a better understanding of military affairs within Hawaii.

Originally from Guam, Kyle completed high school in San Diego and earned a bachelor’s degree with distinction in finance from San Diego State University. He also holds an Executive Leadership Certificate from the University of Washington Foster School of Business and graduated from the Pacific Coast Banking School at the University of Washington’s Graduate School of Business.

Why do you want to become a mentor in this program?
I have experienced first hand how the right guidance can shape someone’s path – I have personally benefited from the program as a mentee and still keep in touch with my mentor. Mentorship is not just giving advice, I see it as an opportunity to invest in someone’s potential, the same way others invested in me. It is a partnership and an opportunity to pay it forward.

What specific skills, knowledge or experience can you share with your mentee?
Skills: Negotiation, Emotional Intel (EQ), anything Finance, Golf, Social Tact, How to navigate one’s career

Knowledge: Corporate hierarchy, Banking, Leadership

Experience: Navigating Change, Finding Purpose, Conflict Resolution

What are your expectations for a mentor-mentee relationship?
It’s a “partnership” and meetings likely to be in person

How do you approach problem-solving and conflict resolution?
Run towards the problem, not from it, start with the hard and end with the easy stuff

How do you envision success for your mentee, and how will you measure it during the program?
