KHON2 News: P3I helps Hawaii students find tech careers without leaving

For many Hawaiʻi students, beginning a career in technology, cybersecurity or defense may seem like it requires leaving the islands.
Jason Chung, vice president of the Military Affairs Council and co-chair of the Pacific Intelligence & Innovation Initiative, and former P3I intern Cade Fujitani joined Living808 to share how P3I is creating local pathways from education to meaningful employment.
P3I is a workforce development initiative that connects students with opportunities in defense, technology, intelligence and innovation.
By bringing together government agencies, businesses and educational partners, the program provides internships that allow students to gain real-world experience, receive professional mentorship and develop relationships within their chosen industries.
Jason said the goal is to prepare local talent for high-demand careers while strengthening Hawaiʻi’s workforce. Each internship gives students a chance to build technical skills, understand workplace expectations and meet professionals who may help guide their careers.
Cade grew up in Hawaiʻi before attending college on the mainland to study computer science. He returned home during his summers to gain professional experience through internships, including one with defense contractor MITRE, where he first learned about P3I.
Through P3I, Cade was placed with Naval Information Warfare Center Pacific, also known as NIWC Pacific.
The internship introduced him to innovative work being done in Hawaiʻi and helped him form relationships with mentors and other interns.
Cade said those relationships became one of the most valuable parts of the experience. “Mentors have provided me with invaluable insights and advice,” he shared.
After graduation, Cade had to decide whether to remain on the mainland or return home. P3I introduced him to professionals and organizations throughout Hawaiʻi’s defense community, helping him explore opportunities in the islands.
